Their Special Agent –by– Mel Gough

Their Special Agent (Thistle Hearts – Book 1)

by Mel Gough

The Blurb: A murder. Three gorgeous men. One choice – Do your job, or follow your heart?

On the eve of the Thistle Hearts reunion tour, the rock band’s manager is found murdered. When Special Agent Carrie McDonald arrives to assist with the investigation, the band has mixed emotions about the involvement of the FBI. Fifteen years after their heyday, Jay, Lou and Corey have everything riding on a successful comeback, and their manager’s violent death has thrown them into turmoil. The last thing they need is the wrong kind of press.

As Carrie delves into the case, the band’s complex history of desire and tragedy emerges. Their shared passion intrigues and excites her, and gradually, the men open up and draw her into their ménage.

But a killer is on the loose, and he’s not yet done with Thistle Hearts.

Can Carrie prevent another brutal crime and protect the men who offer her a future beyond her wildest dreams?

MMy Thoughts and Review:

Book #1 Left My Heart Thorny! 🌹🌈🌹

Thistle Hearts Book #1

I have thoroughly enjoyed the few books of Gough’s that I have read so far, because of their grit and look into the darker side of humanity without over embellishing the details to then becoming an action horror instead of action thriller novel.

Gough’s attention to detail is always great in both character and world building. These and other attributes allow the reader to enjoy the book without getting bored or page after page of word fluff.

The Crime(s)…:

The Story itself is about a band going on tour after a decade and a half hiatus. The guys of Thistle Hearts are all still friends, they’ve just gone separate ways and done different things…til this current tour brought them all back together. Now everything has gone to blazes as the band’s manager and one of their best friends, is found murdered. Duh-duh-duh…

Enter Special Agent, Carrie McDonald, who as fate would have it, is in the right place at the right or perhaps wrong time, depending on your pessimistic tendencies. The Detective in charge of the murder calls McDonald in to help him, since the Austin PD are short staffed. Feeling duty bound to help a colleague, she agrees.

Going Undercover(s):

So begins the investigation/ interrogation of the band members and staff of Thistle Hearts. Carrie, a seasoned agent finds herself undercover, which she says she is no good at, and she also finds herself under the covers, and in other positions (which she is apparently very good at) all while still investigating and interrogating folks.

There are red herrings tossed about, but rather than cast suspicion elsewhere they left me struggling to find cohesive parts…among the cast of characters, and the plot itself. I love twists and turns and I kept reading and believing this would all press out nicely – like ironing out a crumpled shirt.

Romantic Perspective:

I kept waiting for the romance as well, and the joining of each band member, perhaps with the exception of Corey, seemed forced and disjointed. I didn’t buy the connection between Lou and Carrie, at all, and I struggled sensing any “realness” in Carrie’s intimate moment with Jay.

The story is labeled LGBT, and the band members are each into each other, with Jay and Lou being a couple, and Corey sometimes being a third. There are no MM scenes, until 97% into the story (more in a moment). There are three distinct and explicit MF scenes between Carrie and each of the guys, without the others around.

At around the 96% mark the four are in bed, but paired up, Lou and Corey, who do not have intercourse, and Jay and Carrie who do. I didn’t feel the intimacy in this scene either. **sigh…

The story ends with a nugget of understanding why the killer went to so much trouble with his terror spree regarding the band. There is however, no closure regarding the mystery behind it all. The reader is also left with a HFN regarding the band and their FBI agent.

**If you are NOT into MM/MMF on page you will be fine reading this. If you like your sMMexy times a bit more balanced or for them to lean more towards gay coupling on page, you will be disappointed.

**If the mystery/ thriller aspect is more your thing, this delivers great build up, but is quite anticlimactic, and leaves you wondering if you missed a vital part of the book somewhere.

Thistle Hearts (the book) and I lacked chemistry, so I do not believe I will continue their tour with them. As with all my reviews, these are just my thoughts and opinions. You should read the book to form your own.
