MMy Thoughts and Review
At the first stop on my Journey through the Badlands I meet the heroes who will be my guides.
Say hello to Simon, a medium and clairvoyant owns a shop on the boardwalk in Myrtle beach. He does readings, holds seances, and gives haunted tours. Don’t be fooled by Simon however…he may have “for entertainment purposes only” in small print on his business card, but he is the real deal. Simon also holds a PhD and until a few years ago was a professor in Columbia, South Carolina. There’s a story there, but I’ll let Simon tell you about that.
Our second guide Vic, is a recent implant from Pittsburgh. Vic’s calling in both places…homicide detective. As with any one in law enforcement, Vic never takes anything at face value, finds it hard to trust others, and believes only what he sees with his own eyes. That last thing is why he no longer lives in Pittsburgh, and why after he and his partner find themselves at the dead end of a serial killer trail decides to “see” if a psychic might be able to help. What could it hurt, right?
This book was a really thrilling roller coaster ride. Lots of twists and turns you don’t always see coming. At first, I thought there were two different crimes taking place. The more that happened though, I saw an evolution and migration of things and how these things blended. I realized things were not at all how I thought they were. Take a serial killer and add a heaping helping of magic and the paranormal and you just bought yourself a ticket on that roller coaster I mentioned. So, get in, sit down, buckle up and get ready!
**side-note: Knowing Myrtle Beach the way I do was really cool because I could picture it and these events and it just made the story even more alive to me. 👻
This is in no way a “cozy mystery” kind of read. It is definitely a romance, mystery, thriller that plays with your emotions and has you wishing you had the strength and might of a hoodoo practitioner, the tenacity of a coffee shop owner/ best friend, and the ability to jump through books and smack the heroes around a bit for being too stubborn for words! 😱
Badlands was narrated by Kale Williams who did a tremendous job bringing Brice’s characters to life. This was my first time with Williams, but I am glad to know he continues as the voice in this world.
I am looking forward to the next stop on the Journey through the Badlands. I hope you’ll join me.

The Blurb: Medium and clairvoyant Simon Kincaide owns a Myrtle Beach boardwalk shop where he runs ghost tours, holds seances, and offers private psychic readings, making a fresh start after his abilities cost him his lover and his job as a folklore professor.
Jaded cop Vic D’Amato saw something supernatural he couldn’t explain during a shootout several years ago in Pittsburgh and relocated to Myrtle Beach to leave the past behind, still skeptical about the paranormal. But when the search for a serial killer hits a dead end, Vic battles his skepticism to ask Simon for help.
As the body count rises, Simon’s involvement makes him a target and a suspect. But Simon can’t say no, even if it costs him his life and heart.
